Following a successful rebuild of the dryer section supplied by Toscotec, Ranheim Paper & Board restarted PM5 at their facility in Norway. The two-phase project was completed on schedule, and PM5, which has been in operation since 1960, is now efficiently producing greyboard and coreboard with basis weights ranging from 220 to 500 gsm.

The target of increasing the production capacity by better controlling the felt tensions and felt guiding has been fully accomplished. The design upgrade of several felt loops has improved the machine’s cleanliness. Toscotec replaced PM5’s existing long shaft drive system with a silent drive system in the entire dryer section. The project also included a completely new electrical drive and its control system for the paper machine. The rebuild format offered a full service package composed of the complete erection with supervision, training, commissioning, and start-up assistance.

Johanne S. Ramdal, Head of Production at Ranheim Paper & Board, says, “We are happy that the project has been successfully completed with the achievement of all our objectives and according to schedule. The good relationship and collaboration with Toscotec have been an important factor in the whole process. This optimization of our dryer section is allowing us to increase the speed of the machine to respond to growing market demand.”

Giancarlo Gianlorenzi, Sales Manager at Toscotec, says, “Along two years of cooperation on this project, we established a very collaborative relationship with Ranheim Paper & Board’s team. This type of rebuild is Toscotec’s specialization, ad it has been exciting to install our technology in the highly technological Northern European market. We have entered an attractive marketplace that offers great potential for technological rebuilds perfectly in line with our know-how.”
