SAEL at San Martino paper mill will provide a complete Multi Drive, PCC, MCC, and Automation Control System for PM2

SAEL at San Martino paper mill will provide a complete Multi Drive, PCC, MCC, and Automation Control System for PM2
San Martino paper mill in Italy.

San Martino paper mill, in collaboration with SAEL for over 35 years, is preparing for a significant investment in its paper machine in 2025. The investment, amounting to approximately 13 million Euros, involves extensive upgrades to several parts of the existing machine.

The main contractor for the project is De Juliis, and the upgrades include partial rebuilding in stock preparation, new implementations for the press section, dryers, vacuum, pope reel, steam and hoods, and a new medium voltage substation with PCC, MCC, and medium voltage transformer/switch.

The project will be executed as a turnkey solution by SAEL, encompassing new cabinets, PCC, MCC, desk motors, and the medium voltage substation. SAEL will also handle all the wiring within the mill. Due to the project’s scale, the start-up will occur in two phases, scheduled for Spring 2025 and complete end of 2025. SAEL’s involvement aims to control various functions for automation, drives, and energy saving, enhancing the paper machine’s production quality and efficiency.

The property of San Martino Papermill, has decided to upgrade not only the drive and automation systems of the carton board machine but also the mill’s overall approach by selecting SAEL as the supplier. SAEL’s philosophy is to provide customers with the most advanced and revolutionary technology available, offering comprehensive solutions that save time and money. SAEL’s scope in this project includes providing new AC drive cabinets and MCC to manage the newly implemented motors and sensors, along with the DCS for the entire plant. The Platform ONE drives and a complete DCS Scalink system will manage the paper machine, reducing costs for spare parts, faults, and substitution times. With Platform ONE drives, San Martino Papermill will only need one electronic card as a spare part.

The existing DCS Scalink, currently managing stock preparation and PM2, will be extended with four additional 24-inch screens installed in two different engineering stations, integrated with a redundancy system. This extension will allow the complete paper mill to monitor and control the entire process of both machines effectively. New control desks will be distributed along the paper machine, providing operators with a dynamic and comprehensive view of the process, from paper formation to the pope reel. In the future, it is possible to integrate other existing PLCs within the paper mill’s process into the DCS Scalink, such as stock preparation, energy control, REDI (Collection, Processing, and Factory Data Storage), big data, data mining, and more. This integration will enable the paper mill to consolidate all processes into one system, ensuring optimal performance.
